  5. Martigny, Switzerland. A staunch opponent of the modernizations
  6. advocated by the Second Vatican Council, Lefebvre was
  7. excommunicated in 1988 by Pope John Paul II for consecrating
  8. four "traditionalist" bishops without papal approval, creating
  9. the first major schism from the church in more than a century.
